Conversation avec l’auteur. Sur une nouvelle traduction française du 'Convivio' par Bruno Pinchard

Abstract

À l’occasion du septième centenaire de la mort de dante en 2021, le philosophe français Bruno Pinchard, spécialiste de Dante, a voulu entreprendre une nouvelle traduction de l'oeuvre du poète florentin pour la maison d'édition Gallimard. La sortie du premier ouvrage traduit – le Convivio ‒ a été l'occasion pour une conversation au cours de laquelle il a expliqué aux lecteurs son approche à la traduction, a indiqué les défis auxquels il a dû se confronter et a parcouru la présence de Dante dans sa pensée et dans son oeuvre personnel. Si la philosophie de l'auteur du Convivio était sans surprise au centre de l'attention de Pinchard, le chercheur français n'a pas esquivé des réflexions sur la politique, même contemporaine, sur la langue d'origine et sur son résultat en français ou bien sur l'accueil que Dante a eu en terre de France. Quatorze réponses à autant de questions qui ont eu l’ambition de susciter l'intérêt des lecteurs de Dante pour une traduction qui est à l'image de son auteur et mais qui s'inscrit sans aucun doute dans la tradition de sa réception française.

On the fifth centenary of Dante's death in 2021, the French philosopher Bruno Pinchard, a Dante scholar, undertook a new translation of Dante's work for the Gallimard publishing house. The publication of the first translated work – the
Convivio – provided the opportunity for a conversation in which Pichard explained his approach to translation, pointed out the challenges he had to face, and discussed the presence of Dante in his own thoughts and work. The philosophy of the Florentine poet was unsurprisingly the focus of Pinchard's attention; nevertheless the French scholar did not evade reflections on politics (even contemporary politics), on Dante's language and its rendering into French, or on Dante's reception in France. Fourteen answers to as many questions: this interview aims to arouse the interest of Dante’s readers for a translation which reflects the personality of the transator and is therefore in the tradition of the French reception of Dante's work.
